Common questions about Talavera tile
From sourcing and authenticity to pool safety and installation requirements for Southern California projects.
What is authentic Talavera tile and where does it come from?▼
Authentic Talavera is a tin-glazed earthenware tile hand-painted by artisans in Tonalá, Guadalajara, and Oaxaca, Mexico. The tradition dates to 16th-century New Spain. Each tile is individually painted, kiln-fired twice, and unique — no two are exactly alike.
Is Talavera tile safe for pool waterlines?▼
Yes. Pool-grade Talavera is kiln-fired at temperatures that produce a durable, non-porous glaze rated for continuous water exposure. Specify pool-rated tile and verify the tile meets ANSI A137.1 slip-resistance requirements for your application.
Does Talavera tile need to be sealed?▼
The glazed face of Talavera does not require sealing. However, the unglazed terra cotta body and grout joints should be sealed with a penetrating impregnator to prevent moisture intrusion, staining, and efflorescence — especially in wet-area applications.
Can I get custom colors and patterns?▼
Yes. NexaBuilder's artisan workshops in Mexico accept custom color matches and pattern requests. Minimum order quantities apply for custom work. Provide a reference image or Pantone color and we will produce samples for your approval before full fabrication.
What is the lead time for Talavera tile orders?▼
Standard in-stock patterns ship in 2-3 weeks. Custom colors and patterns require 4-8 weeks from design approval. All material is imported per project and inspected on arrival at the California job site before installation begins.

Installation Guide — By Application
Setting methods, grouting, sealing, and tools for Talavera tile installation in Southern California pools, bathrooms, and kitchens.
Installation Guide — By Application
Talavera tile is hand-made and may have slight dimensional variation (±3mm is normal). This requires back-buttering each tile individually and using a 3/16" V-notch trowel with white latex-modified thin-set. Never use pre-mixed mastic in wet areas, pools, or exterior applications.
Hand-glazed Puebla tiles resist heat and stains while throwing a warm, textured glow under modern range hoods. Spec: ANSI A118.4 polymer-modified thin-set; 3/16" grout joints minimum; seal grout after 72-hr cure with a penetrating siloxane sealer.
Hand-brushed floral borders introduce organic texture that softens porcelain and stone. Spec: White latex-modified thin-set; non-sanded grout for joints ≤1/8"; apply crystalline waterproofing membrane on wet-wall substrate before setting.
Twice-baked high-fire majolica tiles for countertop and sink surround installation. Spec: Epoxy grout only for water-exposure zones; slope surfaces minimum 1/8" toward drain; seal terra cotta body edges at sink cutouts.
Calibrated to sit alongside rustic Saltillo and terracotta pavers. Spec: Fully cured concrete sub-base; slope ≥ 1/4" per foot for drainage; ANSI A118.15 high-polymer flexible thin-set to accommodate thermal expansion differences; grout joints 3/8"–1/2"; seal Saltillo before grouting to prevent bleed-through; finish with breathable penetrating sealer over entire assembly.
Pool-grade only — standard low-fire Talavera will fail under submersion or freeze-thaw cycles. Spec: Verify "Vitreous" or "Pool-Grade" rating on the tile lot; ANSI A118.10 certified liquid waterproofing membrane on pool shell before setting; waterproof chemical-resistant epoxy grout; maintain balanced pool chemistry (pH 7.4–7.6, Calcium Hardness 200–400 ppm) to prevent scale buildup on glazed surfaces.
Alternating medallion and ikat motifs for interior and exterior stairways. Spec: Exterior steps require frost-proof rated tile; use back-buttering on every riser; non-slip coefficient of friction (DCOF ≥ 0.42) applies to tread surfaces adjacent to Talavera risers.
Weather-resistant geometric tiles for water features and garden seating — built to handle shifting outdoor climates. Spec: Same outdoor patio spec above; for fountain bowls add ANSI A118.10 waterproofing membrane; avoid freeze-thaw in unheated fountains without verified frost-proof tile certification.
Classic cobalt blue scrollwork and bullnose trim tiles for framing focal points. Spec: For fireplace surrounds, install only on the outer surround (not firebox face); maintain 12" clearance from flame; use heat-stable thin-set rated for radiant-heat substrates for installations on or near heated floors.
Use white latex-modified thin-set for all Talavera applications. White mortar prevents grout color bleed through translucent tile bodies. For pool waterlines, use pool-rated epoxy grout only.
Handmade Talavera varies ±3mm. Sort tiles by size before setting, keeping similar sizes together. Use wider grout joints (3/16" minimum) to accommodate natural variation. Do not dry-lay patterns expecting factory precision.
For showers, pools, and exterior applications, apply a crystalline waterproofing membrane to the substrate before setting. Use non-sanded pool-grade grout for joints under 1/8" and sanded grout for wider joints.
Cleaning, Grouting & Sealing
After grout cure (72 hrs minimum), clean with pH-neutral tile cleaner. Never use muriatic acid on Talavera — it damages the glaze and terra cotta body. Remove haze with manufacturer-approved grout haze remover diluted per instructions.
Apply penetrating impregnator sealer to grout joints and any exposed terra cotta edges. The glazed face does not absorb sealer. Re-seal grout annually. For pool applications, use a chlorine-resistant formula.
Grout color dramatically affects Talavera appearance. White or cream grout emphasizes the hand-painted pattern; charcoal grout creates a grid effect. Test a sample panel first — grout color shifts as it dries.
Clean with pH-neutral soap only. Never bleach, vinegar, or citrus cleaners — these etch the glaze over time. For pool Talavera, maintain proper water chemistry to prevent calcium scaling and mineral deposits.

Always wet-cut Talavera tile. Dry cutting generates ceramic dust — wear N95 minimum respiratory protection. Never cut over finished surfaces; use a wet saw station with contained splash.
Pricing a Talavera Tile Job
All Talavera is imported per project from Mexico. Standard patterns: 2-3 weeks. Custom colors and patterns: 4-8 weeks from design approval. Do not schedule installation without confirmed delivery and full tile inspection on arrival.
Order 15-20% overage for Talavera — breakage during cutting is higher than factory tile due to handmade dimensional variation. Once a lot leaves the workshop, matching exact colorways is very difficult. Over-ordering is always cheaper than sourcing a second lot.
Include in your bid: substrate waterproofing, white latex-modified thin-set (higher cost than standard), pool-grade epoxy grout for pool applications, and additional labor time for back-buttering and sorting by size. Talavera sets 20-30% slower than factory tile.
Always inspect Talavera in person before full order — photos do not capture glaze variation, craze lines, or color depth. Request a sample board of the actual lot. Verify the quantity includes your 15-20% overage before purchase.
